Long answer is that ship creation and customization has always been an important element to Traveller, and the big modern one of Mongoose 2E is no exception.īut something about Traveller is that it sort of grew into a standard universe from what was a system that was designed to operate more generically (and sort of still is in T5), but that MgT2 scaled back on a lot, at least so far. The other alternatives are Traveller5, which is the latest version from the original designer but spreads itself very wide in terms of trying to let you create all sorts of settings or some of the Cepheus Engine materials (they're based on the first edition of Mongoose Traveller) which include a variety of starship design rules which might capture one particular setting well. There are some editions (Traveller: the New Era) and Traveller 4 which have a book called Fire, Fusion and Steel which provides comprehensive (and complicated!) rules for designing all sorts of equipment including several types of FTL drive - I've seen an Enterprise-A done up using one of those systems. Some alternatives are in the Traveller Companion, so if you wanted something different then it might be in there. One issue might be that it only covers the types of system used in the official setting (Jump Drive for FTL, no FTL comms, etc). You can certainly create ships with the High Guard supplement.
